Weather Emergency FAQ's

WEATHER EMERGENCY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Is there a designated emergency shelter in Marion?

A: Yes, The Sippican School is the town’s designated emergency shelter.

Q: When will the shelter be open?

A: There is no specified time.  The town’s leaders and emergency personnel will closely monitor the approaching storm.  The shelter will be opened prior to the start of evacuation of low lying areas.

Q: How will I know when to evacuate or when the shelter is open?

A: Information will be broadcast on the local cable news channel, through the CodeRed Emergency Notification System (Reverse 911) and e-mailed through the Town of Marion Town News Notifications.

Q: Can I bring pets to the shelter?

A: Yes, A designated area has been established to house pets at the shelter.

Q: I live in an area that has flooded in the past, is there somewhere I can park my vehicles?

A: Yes, The designated parking areas will be the town field behind the Town Hall, with the exception of the baseball diamond.  Once the field is filled, additional parking will be available at the end of Benson Brook Rd near the water tower.  The Sippican School Parking Lot is being reserved for people who are staying at the town’s emergency shelter at Sippican School.

Q: What areas will be evacuated?

A: The evacuation areas will vary depending on several factors including tides and the severity of the approaching storm.  Planting Island is the only area that will be evacuated for nearly every serious storm.  Most homes near the coast are vulnerable and are likely to be evacuated during hurricanes.  SLOSH (Sea, Lake and Overland Surges from Hurricanes) is a computerized model run by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) to estimate storm surge heights and winds resulting from historical, hypothetical, or predicted hurricanes by taking into account several factors.  A SLOSH map for Marion can be found here: Marion SLOSH Map

Q: I live on Planting Island, do I have to evacuate when notified to do so?

A: Yes, Once the water breaches the causeway, the Marion Water Department will shut off the fresh water supply to the island.  This is done to protect the town’s water supply in the event the causeway is washed away.  Also, once the water breaches the causeway it is impossible for emergency personnel to reach any of the residences on the island.

Q: What should I do immediately after the storm?

A: Be aware of downed power lines and utility lines, some of the lines may still be live.  Be cautious of downed lines especially before attempting to remove any downed limbs or trees.  Do not go out and explore the town.  Please stay off the roads to give emergency personnel and the utility companies time to remove downed lines, downed trees and other hazards that may now be present.  Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas.
