WEATHER EMERGENCY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Is there a designated emergency
shelter in Marion? A: Yes, The Sippican
School is the town’s designated emergency shelter.
Q: When will the shelter be open?
A: There is no
specified time. The town’s
leaders and emergency personnel will closely monitor the approaching
storm. The shelter will be
opened prior to the start of evacuation of low lying areas. A: Information will
be broadcast on the local cable news channel, through the CodeRed
Emergency Notification System (Reverse 911) and e-mailed through the
Town of Marion Town News Notifications.
A: Yes, A designated
area has been established to house pets at the shelter.
A: Yes, The
designated parking areas will be the town field behind the Town Hall,
with the exception of the baseball diamond.
Once the field is filled, additional parking will be available at
the end of Benson Brook Rd near the water tower.
The Sippican School Parking Lot is being reserved for people who
are staying at the town’s emergency shelter at Sippican School. A: The evacuation
areas will vary depending on several factors including tides and the
severity of the approaching storm.
Planting Island is the only area that will be evacuated for
nearly every serious storm.
Most homes near the coast are vulnerable and are likely to be evacuated
during hurricanes.
SLOSH (Sea, Lake and Overland Surges from Hurricanes) is a computerized
model run by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) to estimate storm surge
heights and winds resulting from historical, hypothetical, or predicted
hurricanes by taking into account several factors.

Marion SLOSH Map A: Yes, Once the
water breaches the causeway, the Marion Water Department will shut off
the fresh water supply to the island.
This is done to protect the town’s water supply in the event the
causeway is washed away.
Also, once the water breaches the causeway it is impossible for
emergency personnel to reach any of the residences on the island. A: Be aware of
downed power lines and utility lines, some of the lines may still be
live. Be cautious of downed
lines especially before attempting to remove any downed limbs or trees.
Do not go out and explore the town.
Please stay off the roads to give emergency personnel and the
utility companies time to remove downed lines, downed trees and other
hazards that may now be present.
Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas.
